Your teenager finally passed their driver's license test and maybe they even have their own car to take out on the road. This is a big milestone in a teen's life but it's also a time when parents should be cautious and make sure their teenager is acting responsibly behind the wheel. Part of being a responsible driver includes proper maintenance and care of the vehicle. While you might first be focused on getting your teen to pay attention to what's under the hood, don't forget that auto glass, including the windshield, is also a very important part of the vehicle. Here are some tips you can pass on to your teen to help them keep their auto glass in good condition.
Get Them a Microfiber Cloth and Encourage Them to Clean Inside and Out
Some teens just aren't very good at cleaning things. You might be thinking of your teen's room, for example, but hopefully, that laziness won't continue over to their car. Encourage your child to regularly wipe down their windshield and the rest of their auto glass on a regular basis. It can be difficult to see at night when oncoming headlights shine through a windshield that is covered in smudges. Get your teen a microfiber cloth and tell them to wipe down both sides of the glass on a regular basis.
Tell Them to Be Careful With Ice
You don't have to be a car owner to know how to use an ice-scraper. It's simple enough of a concept, right? Just make sure your teen doesn't get too ambitious with the ice-scraper if they are late for school one morning. Never pound the ice scraper down like a hammer to try and break up the ice. Use firm but not too hard strokes and the scraper will do its job. Hopefully, your teen also knows not to pour hot water right onto the glass as this could cause a reaction that leads to a big crack.
Make Sure They Are Changing Their Windshield Wipers
Dirty windshield wipers don't do a very good job of cleaning much of anything, leaving your teen's windshield dirty and hard to see through. Encourage your teen to change their windshield wipers every time they change their oil.
Talk to Your Teen About Windshield Cracks
Hopefully, nothing bad will ever happen to your kid's windshield. But if their car's windshield does sustain a crack, they need to know what to do. Tell them to get the car towed or drive it immediately to an auto glass repair center as soon as possible. If the car will be driven, tell your teen to put a piece of clear tape over the crack in order to keep dirt and air from getting in and causing the crack to expand.
