Tips For Cleaning Your Car's Carpeting

Your car probably feels like your second home, especially if you commute in it. The more time you spend in your car, the dirtier it's likely to get. If you've noticed that your car's carpet is dirty, you may be wondering about the best way to clean it. There are many things that you can do to restore your carpet's original beauty, including working with an automotive carpet cleaner to do the work professionally. However, if you decide that you want to try to clean it yourself, it's important that you approach it properly. Here are a few tips to help you get your car's carpet clean with ease.

Deal With Pet Residues

Once the floor mats are removed and the carpet is fully exposed, you'll want to start by addressing any lingering pet residue. Whether you take your pets in the car or you've purchased a used car that may have previously had animals in it, you can eliminate pet odors by sprinkling a layer of borax on the carpet surface. Let the borax sit for an hour or so, then vacuum it up. Repeat this process a second time to help remove any fleas that may be present as well.

Treat Stains

The borax treatment eliminates not only the pet residue and fleas, but it also removes the dirt in the carpet. Once that's done, you can start treating any stains that may be present. Use carpet cleaning chemicals with a stain remover or simply spray the stains with glass cleaner. The glass cleaner will draw the stain out. Spray the whole stain and then blot it after it's soaked for about five minutes or so.

Clean The Carpet

Once you've addressed pet residue and any present stains, you can clean the rest of the carpet. You'll want to use traditional carpet cleaning chemicals with either a machine-powered scrubber or a heavy brush to clean the carpet thoroughly. Use enough shampoo to clean the carpet, but don't over-saturate the carpet because it will make it harder to dry and put your car at risk of mold growth.

Restore The Fibers

If your carpet is worn or older, you may want to restore its appearance by bringing out the color and fiber structure. The best way for you to do this is with ammonia. Dilute some ammonia in water, then blot it on with a sponge. Apply it to the faded, worn areas of the carpet to help bring some vibrancy to the fibers again.
